A new Sainsbury's for Ashton Gate

Bristol City Council has approved plans for our new store

Sainsbury’s plans for the regeneration of Ashton Gate

Updated 04 March 2011

On 2 March 2011, Bristol City Council’s Development Control Committee (South and East) granted outline planning permission for a new Sainsbury’s store at Ashton Gate.

Our plans are the result of widespread consultation and reflect the feedback we’ve received from the public and community groups, including improvements to the store’s sustainability credentials and measures to mitigate any potential impact on traffic and local retailers.

A new Sainsbury’s at Ashton Gate will enable Bristol City Football Club to build a state-of-the-art 30,000-seat stadium at Ashton Vale. It will also allow for the redevelopment of the current store at Winterstoke Road, which also has outline planning permission for employment use and housing.

Following the planning committee’s decision to approve our plans for Ashton Gate, the proposals will now go before the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government because the decision did not follow the planning officer’s recommendation to refuse the plans.

Should the plans continue to move forward, Sainsbury’s would relocate from the Winterstoke Road store to the Ashton Gate site in 2013. Our current store would remain trading up until the day the new store opens.

Bruno Moore, Sainsbury’s regional town planning manager, said: “Sainsbury’s is delighted with the Council’s decision to approve the planning application. We’d like to thank everybody who has taken part in the consultation and offered their support for these plans.

“Together, the plans by Bristol City Football Club and Sainsbury’s will bring forward an unprecedented level of investment and regeneration to South Bristol, including a fantastic regional stadium, new housing and business units at the site of our existing store, hundreds of new job opportunities for local people and a flagship Sainsbury’s store.”
